Top Five Questions to Create an Unfair Marketing Advantage

Is marketing dead?  No, but it’s definitely changing!  Modern marketing is less about convincing and more about educating, and self-employed professionals are best suited to capitalize on the trend.

Whether you’re talking about modern marketing in general, online branding or the evolving world of social media, the key to success boils down to your story and how you tell it.  Below, you’ll find the top five questions to craft an unfair marketing advantage for your business:

  1. What do you do that’s remarkable?  Begin by identifying the things people are amazed by, the things you get asked questions about, the things that capture their attention.
  2. What’s the “human story” behind that value?  Take what you do that’s remarkable and explain how it changes people’s lives.  Describe the emotional impact of your product or service.
  3. How can you tell that human story in a visual way?  There are different types of content: text, audio, photos and video.  Which is most viral?  You guessed it: photos and video!
  4. How can you get your customers to tell that human story?  Content can come from two places: you or your customers.  Which is most viral?  Right again: content from your customers!
  5. How can you incentivize your customers to tell more stories?  Incentives, incentives and more incentives.  If you give people a reason to be creative, you’ll be amazed at what you get back.

There are dozens of examples of companies that have held contests to inspire their customers and prospects to create dynamic content promoting their business.  In some cases, this strategy has turned “mature markets” on their head, leaving industry giants reeling and innovative newcomers cashing in.

Today’s post is from my friend Patrick Schwerdtfeger, author of Marketing Shortcuts for the Self-Employed (2011, Wiley) and a regular speaker for Bloomberg TV.  He has spoken about modern entrepreneurship and the social media revolution at conferences and business events around the world.

Is SEO Irreducibly Complex?

In his book, Origin of Species, Charles Darwin says that:

“If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.”

This is typically used by proponents of Intelligent Design to state their case against evolution by invoking the principle of Irreducible Complexity, which is to say that:

This applies to any system of interacting parts in which the removal of any one part destroys the function of the entire system…

Keyword Optimization: Crucial to Marketing and Advertising Success

In the process of Search Engine Optimization, keyword search is essential. The efforts for rating high in the search engines will never be successful if the words and phrases are lost in the search. Moreover, they will not be directed to the targeted website.

Need for Marketing and Advertising Successes are linked in Keyword Optimization

The more traffic directed to your website by keywords and phrases typed in the search engines, the more people are reached by the ads and products available for the entrepreneurs online. The people that are reached by the keyword optimization in your website are the people that are likely to be your clients.

Getting more clicks or hits in the ads you place in your site is possibly diverted to money and of course marketing your items online makes your market the whole world. Moreover, the optimized words that are leading to your website are plainly keyword marketing; it means your products, services and other cash-generating purpose for the website is sold by the keywords. Therefore, more attention must be exerted for coming up with the words and phrases you must incorporate to your website.

The Process of Keyword Search in Quest for a High SEO Ranking

  • Brainstorming

Thinking of words that the targeted group will most likely be searching for those that are available in your marketing products or site must be the first to be considered. These words must have available information that will be useful for your website visitors.

  • Customer Surveys

Communicating and getting the customers’ ideas and preferences directly can help generate keywords that may produce the traffic for a high popularity rate. Expansion of the ideas on keywords can also be attained in this process.

  • Application of the Data from Keyword Research Tools

Using some tools like the Wordtracker and Overture can offer helpful information in looking for words, terms, and phrases that are not overly used in the SEO. This will add more edge to the keywords that you will come up for gaining popularity rating.

  • Selection of Terms

The analysis of the value and comparison on traffic generation, as well as relevancy and probability of considered terms must be studied well. This process can help in the decision on the best terms that are likely going to produce traffic for your website in the end.

  • Testing and Analytics on Performance

Choosing among the selection of keyword optimization for the website and target implementation, measuring of the web traffic must be monitored. This way, refining keyword selection can still be done, in case the need based on the activity and conversion of the keyword search is found.

The ability of any webmaster to determine effective results of the keywords during the planning process can help in the development of the proper way and procedures for the website to have its longevity in the marketing competition online. Failure for the analysis on the keyword marketing will affect your website’s popularity rank. The keywords you may choose to use in the SEO of your website will have the power to boost your popularity ranking; therefore, exertion of great efforts in the process must be given.

Why I Blog, and Why You (and Your Business) Should Too

Wow.  It’s hard to believe it’s been 5 weeks since my last blog post.  This is the first time in many months that I haven’t blogged for such a long period of time.  It isn’t that I didn’t want to blog, as I am always thinking of things to say, but I really needed to use all of my creative time to finish my 2nd social media book, which I hope to be formally announcing next week.

Not blogging for such a long time gave me some time to think about what blogging means to me and why I feel the need to keep publishing my thoughts. But if you have been avoiding blogging or just don’t see the benefits in doing so, here’s why you should be blogging should you make the time to do so:

Your Business Should be Strategically Blogging – I mentioned in a blog post several months ago that almost every social media strategy should have a blog component in it.  The benefits of business blogging are huge: One of my clients literally doubled their website traffic with just 2 blog posts aligned with a social media strategy that I had created.  I have already illustrated some case studies for B2B business blogging which shows real results can be had no matter how niche your industry.  I realize that for many businesses and small business owners they just don’t have time to sit down and write blog posts, but for them I say 2 things:

  1. Business blogging will increase your Inbound Marketing and bring you more prospects over time, making your business development activities more efficient and shortening your sales cycle.
  2. If you don’t have time for business blogging, hire an expert.  There are an abundance of writers out there that, with experience and training in your company culture and products, can lend a very needed helping hand.  You can also try the excellent services provided by Constant Content.

Professionals Should Begin to Blog (as outlined in my post 7 Reasons to Start Blogging)

  1. Blogging is the Best Way to Build & Showcase Your Personal Brand
  2. Blogging Helps Differentiate You from Everyone Else
  3. Blogging Brings You New Opportunities
  4. Blogging is the Ultimate Pay It Forward
  5. You’re Already Tweeting…Why Not Add Your Own Original Views in More Depth?
  6. You Can Start to Monetize Your Knowledge
  7. Because You Can

There is an 8th reason which I just remembered recently after taking time off my blog and concentrating on finishing my book:

8. Leave Your Legacy

We don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but we each have unique and rich experiences in life to share today.  Doesn’t publishing this content potentially help others in the future?  If something was to happen to us today, wouldn’t we want to equip our followers with our knowledge so that they can utilize it to better their future?

This blog began as a simple way to help others by answering questions about social media.  As I am about to publish my 2nd book, I look forward to continuing this mission with additional passion, sharing my experience and ideas in hopes that it might help you, my reader.  There is no upsell and no holding back – I am devoted to helping you and hoping that you can leverage this website for your business and professional benefit.  I cannot promise you that I will blog x times per week going forward, as the publication of organic ideas should not be governed by an editorial calendar.  I will promise you, however, that when I do blog, it will be for real.

What is your reason for blogging?
